John Halligan is an emerging artist who grew up on the Jersey Shore and from a very early age followed his passion for art. He studied at the University of Delaware for fine arts where he would go on to fall in love with a new medium, Sculpture. He considers his carving tools the pen, his wood the paper, and the results are simply the poetry of an individual. The core of his ideas and work revolve around issues of self worth, entrapment, and overcoming a personal world of toxic masculinity. These guarded feelings work their way through him and eventually through to his art.Process is a very important aspect to his work. Whether it is the fluid gesture of molten aluminum or the intimate act of carving, these processes and others are essential to the work. Each one of the actions has a tempo and becomes an expression of importance and cadence. What draws him to carving in particular is its methodical rhythm. As he reveals and removes material he forms a relationship to the ideas he’s trying to express. Not every piece wants to cooperate and every piece is unpredictable, but that is how life is inevitably going to be every time, so why would the process be any different? Working with objects that were once living organisms have their own unique characteristics just as any individual. They speak a language of uniqueness and from that a personality sprouts as he carves through the layers of growth. Their personalities and his begin to synchronize as they gain an understanding of one another to express their deepest feelings. Through this an everlasting bond is cultivated.
